Reducing carbon emissions by bike

Cars make up a relevant part of all carbon emissions produced by humanity, which is in part accelerated by delivery services that have to operate countless trucks to bring ordered goods to the consumers. But what if we could use something instead of trucks? This question can be answered by a German startup from Magdeburg. The following information was taken from a article with the title “Der Spargel kommt per Lastenrad” published by Astrid Ludwig in the FAZ on the 29th of March 2021.

The startup “Lieferrad DA”, which was conceived by students of the Darmstadt university with the help of their professors, aims to reduce the usage of delivery services which are not ecologically sustainable by providing a currently subsidized and thus free alternative for intracity logistics. Targeting end users as their, they offer a service to order goods from local retail businesses that are picked up by bike curriers and brought to the client. Around 50 retail stores offer this method of delivery. The drivers, who are usually students themselves are paid fairly. This sounds all like a not rentable business model and this assumption is justified and correct. The project is subsidized by the uni and the state but that’s not an issue. Because of the experimental nature of the endeavor it is great that it does not have to be profitable yet: The scientists that organize the project are collecting valuable data with which they can develop strategies how to make this business more profitable. Currently the organizers are trying to decouple the project from the uni to give them more freedom in regards to the monetary business side.
